Formal Operational Stage

During this last stage, which lasts and develops throughout all of life, around the onset of puberty, young people are able to:


  1. Reason in much more abstract ways that stray from the usual rules
  2. Begin to test hypotheses using systematic logic &
  3. There is a much greater focus on possibilities and on ideological issues (otherwise known as the development of future thought)

These stages are all necessary for every individual because to develop correctly a child must display the behaviors in all these instances.
